XLIII International Seminar On Macedonian Language, Literature and Culture
We have the honour to invite you to participate at the XLV International Seminar on Macedonian Language, Literature and Culture that will take place in Ohrid from the 22.6 until the 5.7. 2012. We have prepared a rich and diverse program for the participants of the Seminar. The program is comprised of Macedonian language tutorials, lectures in the area of language, literature and culture, as well as a number of elective courses in different areas. The cultural and tourist program gives an opportunity to discover the Macedonian cultural heritage, especially its pearl – Ohrid.
The organization of this Seminar is based on a long-term experience. Participants will be given the possibility to work with the best Macedonian language lecturers, to attend lectures of specialists in various areas which come from highly established scientific and cultural institutions, as well as to become acquainted with the work of eminent artist from Macedonia. Within the framework of the Seminar, two days will be devoted to a Scientific Language and Literature Conference which presents a good opportunity to follow the lectures of distinguished Macedonian language scholars from our country and abroad.
Several thousands of participants from over fifty countries have participated on this Seminar. These include students, researchers, professors, and translators etc. who have all become true friends of Macedonia and have passed on their impressions to their home countries. We are truly happy that this year we will encounter once more Macedonian language scholars from different areas in the world since their presence in Ohrid will also give us a chance start up some new valuable friendships. Participants
The Seminar participants are comprised of foreign Slavic studies scholars, Macedonian language scholars, experts on Balkan studies, university professors, researchers, translators, young researchers as well as Slavic and Balkan studies students from all over the world. The number of participants varies from 80 to 100, according to the available financial resources. This year we expect about 85. Despite the participants that receive scholarships, the Seminar welcomes those who are in a position to pay their tuition and subsistence expenses. They will all be given a chance to deepen their knowledge in Macedonian language, literature and culture.
Macedonian language lectors and Lecturers
The Seminar engages as speakers or lecturers only leading experts in their field. The Macedonian language lecturers are part of the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje, and the participating lecturers are all eminent scholars, either at the SS Cyril and Methodius University, or other distinguished scholarly research and cultural institutions in the Republic of Macedonia.
Location
The Seminar will take place in the beautiful city of Ohrid, situated by the magnificent Ohrid Lake, the deepest lake in Europe (960 ft) and one of the oldest in the world. Ohrid is the most beautiful and most attractive city in Macedonia – it is the pearl of ancient architecture and treasury of valuable historic and cultural monuments. Ohrid is one of the oldest European cities. Its antique name is Lychnidos. It is rich in churches and monasteries, built mainly between VII and XIX century. It retains a collection of over 800 icons painted in Byzantine style from XI to XIV century. Ohrid could be named a city-museum; it represents a combination of the antique, modern and oriental. It possesses specific old architecture as well as modern luxurious tourist capacities. The production of the Ohrid pearl is also one of Ohrid’s specifics. Being one of the leading Macedonian tourist centres, Ohrid has always been attractive to tourists offering a diverse repertoire of cultural monuments, events and untouched natural beauty.
Program
The Seminar is comprised of language tutorials and lectures in the morning and cultural activities in the afternoon.
Participants can choose an appropriate degree in the stated courses:
• Beginners’ course • Intermediate • Advanced linguists • Advanced literature.
Macedonian language tutorials • The course schedule for Macedonian language classes is 4 hours per day (beginners’ course), six days a week, whereas the other courses are scheduled at 3 hours per day, six days a week. The participants will be placed in groups in accordance with their level of language proficiency after performing a placement test on the first day of the Seminar.
Lectures
Lectures will be held twice a day (2 hours). The focus of the lectures will be surveying the most recent research achievements in the field of studies of the Macedonian language, literature and culture.
Elective courses
During the first week of the Seminar, the participants will have the opportunity to choose between courses in: First week o History of the Macedonian language o History of the Macedonian culture o Old Church Slavonic Language Macedonian folk songs
Second week o History of the Macedonian People o Review of the Macedonian literature o Dialectology of Macedonian language Ethnology of Macedonian people o Macedonian folk dances In the second week of the Seminar, the participants can choose one of the following courses: • Dialectology of Macedonian language • Archaeological interpretations of symbols and myths from the Macedonian culture • Macedonian folk dances.
• Macedonian kitchen The Folk Dances course may be attended by all participants since it takes place in the evenings.
Translation Workshop
This workshop involves translations of various text-types and genres, such as: business and technical, journalistic and Macedonian literary texts. The participants can choose to work in English, Russian or Polish (1 hour per day).
ADDITIONAL PROGRAMME
Cultural Programme
A rich and varied cultural programm is being prepared for the participants, namely: visits to the superb historical sites which are part of the cultural heritage of Ohrid (a number of churches with significant frescoes and icons, the amphitheatre, the Samuil fortress), an evening of showing a Macedonian film, visits to theatre performances, a talk with a distinguished writer, presentation of the works of an eminent painter, visits to art galleries, and getting acquainted with the latest publications in the field of Macedonian linguistics and literature. Tourist activities Excursions will also form part of the program as another wonderful way to increase the participants’ knowledge about Macedonia. They will go sightseeing Ohrid in order to become acquainted with its beauties.

Participants’ arrival
The date of arrival of the participants in Ohrid is expected to be on the 22.5., and their date of departure will be on the Ohrid - 5.7.2012.

Certificate of Macedonian Language Proficiency
At the end of the Seminar, participants will receive a diploma, certifying to their acquired knowledge and skills based on the courses they attended at the Seminar. Upon request, the Seminar can specify the exact number of classes that the participant attended.
