International strategy

Ss. Cyril and Methodius University was founded in 1949 and today it consists of 21 different faculties and 10 research institutes. The language of instruction is Macedonian, however some courses are taught in the minority languages and English language for some postgraduate courses. The University organizes postgraduate studies on 17 different faculties and two research institutes with total of 148 disciplines. During the academic 2008-2009 at the University were enrolled over 40 000 students.

Ss. Cyril and Methodius University is actively following the Bologna Process, fully accepting the  Bologna Declaration as it’s strategy with the following priorities:
  • Development and securing the academic autonomy
  • European Credit Transfer System full implementation
  • Harmonization and compatibility of the study programs with the EU model of university
  • System of Quality assurance with evaluation and accreditation of the higher education institutions and study programs
  • Student and academic staff mobility
  • Competitiveness at home and abroad

Levels of study programmes offered 


  • B.A - duration of studies: three years, including 180 credits.
  • M.A -duration of studies: two years, including 120 credits (total 300 credits combined with the first cycle of studies).
  • PhD - duration of studies: three years, including 180 credits. Research Doctorate is still possible until the end of 2009.

Admission criteria


Foreign students applying at “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University need to comply with the national requirements for admission, stipulated at the competition for new admissions.
Admission criteria for exchange students
European students who want to participate in mobility on exchange basis, primarily have to have the nationality of the eligible countries and must be registered at one of the European partner institutions. Another important criterion is, successfully completed at least one year of studies of higher educational level.

  • Learning Agreement, signed by the responsible person at the home institution
  • Letters of recommendation by academic staff of the home institution
  • Transcript of Records
  • Admission procedure: Foreign citizens may enrol in the first year of study or higher degrees (MA,Ph.D) provided they meet the following requirements:
  • completed four-year secondary school or acquired bachelor degree (depending on the level of education);
  • completed procedure for the recognition of foreign education certificates and the decision on the recognition issued by the Ministry of Education and Science (www.mofk.gov.mk)

10 (A) Excellent (outstanding performance with only minor errors)
9  (B)
Very Good (above the average standards but with some errors)
8  (C) Good (generally sound work with a number notable errors)
7  (D) Satisfactory (fair, but with significant shortcomings )
6  (E) Sufficient (performance meets the minimum criteria)
5  (F) Fail


ECTS- European Credit Transfer System
1 ECTS credit is equivalent to approximately 30 working hours. The annual workload is60 ECTS credits.

Academic calendar: September 15 to September 14
The academic year is divided into two semesters: fall and spring semester.

    Fall semester: September 15 - December 31
    Spring semester: February 1 - May 15

Visas and Residence Permits: Before coming to Macedonia as a student, please check if you are required to obtain a visa to enter Macedonia.
If you require a visa you need:
  • a letter of confirmation of acceptance at the University
  • 2 photos
  • a valid passport
These have to be taken to the nearest consulate or Embassy of the Republic of Macedonia. (list of the consulates and embassies available at: www.mfa.gov.mk
Students who do not require a visa have to apply for a residence permit upon arrival in Skopje at the central police station.

Visa

Incoming BASILEUS students from the member countries of the Consortium are not obliged to possess an entrance visa for Macedonia; they only need to regulate their stay in accordance with their status as exchange students and upon receiving the invitation letter from the International Relations Office of “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University. The International Relations Office staff will guide the students through the process and will provide any further necessary information. 

Insurance


All in-coming students are advised to purchase general insurance prior to the departure to Macedonia. Also, it is a general recommendation for all, to contact the International Relations Office at their universities for more details.

How to get there

Airports: Skopje has one international airport located about 22 kilometers East from the city center, which connects the city with many European cities.
Railways: Skopje Railway Station is approximately 2 kilometers East of the city center. It connects Skopje with other major cities in Macedonia, and also cities across the Balkans.
Taxis and Buses: Skopje main bus station is 2 kilometers East of the city. Buses run through the whole city connecting different areas; the average price for a ticket is 30 denars or about 0.5 euro. Taxis are all over the city, they go between the city center and the airport frequently. The price for a drive to or from the airport is about 15 euros. The average price going through the city is 3 euros.

Skopje is the capital and largest city in the Republic of Macedonia, with more than a third of the population of the country, as well as its political, cultural, economic, and academic centre.

Accommodation:
Students are expected to arrive in Skopje before the start of the semester There is a limited number of beds for the exchange students at the University premises. Private housing is also available for accommodation of international students and the IRO Office is open to help the students about finding private accommodation at reasonable price.

After arrival:
  • Macedonian Language Courses
The Faculty of Philology provides instructions and tutorials for in-coming students. Another possibility is attending courses for Macedonian for foreign learners that are organized in private language schools, and information about them can be obtained any time at the International Relations Office.

  • IRO Office services at the University
International Relations Office at “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje is located in the Rectorate building. The Office provides assistance for incoming students regarding admission, accommodation, counseling and related information. Upon arrival all incoming students should visit the International Relations Office (working hours: Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Culture and Entertainment:
Skopje, the cultural centre of Macedonia is a beautiful and modern city with population of about 800 000 citizens. The city and its vicinity have plenty of cultural and historical monuments which attract the attention of every visitor. (www.exploringmacedonia.com; www.visitmacedonia.com.mk)

Climate:
The mildly continental climate is typical of Skopje. It is characterized with relatively cold and humid winters and warm and dry summers. The average temperature in winter is 1°C and the average temperature in summer is 30°C. Snowfall is common in the winter months, from December to March, and rain and fog are common in autumn, from October to December.

Currency:
The denar is the currency of the Republic of Macedonia (1EUR – 61.75 den) . Money can be easily exchanged in official exchange bureaus and banks. Euros are the easiest to deal with. Traveller’s cheques and bank cards are accepted in most of the shops.

Bank account:
Banks are generally open to the public between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. You may change foreign currency in denars at all banks. On Saturdays the banks are open between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Telephones:
The pre-paid packages for mobile phones are available at the authorized shops of the three companies providing GSMM services: T-Mobile, Cosmofon and VIP, but also at the supermarkets and tobacconists.
